A Flo and Mayo Clinic study found that 34% of American women do not know what reproductive stage they are in.
Confusion was higher among women ages 40 to 44, with 42% saying they did not know their reproductive stage.
The study surveyed 7,650 women ages 35 and older and was published in Menopause.
Researchers used the Menopause Rating Scale to assess symptoms and perimenopause awareness.
Among women with physical and mental symptoms, 56% did not believe they were in perimenopause.
Many women misattributed symptoms to regular periods, endometriosis, postpartum changes, or stopping birth control.
Another 26% said they did not know how to identify perimenopause.
Sixteen percent said they lacked adequate information or care.
Flo said perimenopause support requires both better treatments and earlier recognition of the transition.
Flo is using proprietary datasets and in-house research to help address women’s health evidence gaps amid limited NIH funding.
