New Nationality Law: the decree on loss of nationality in Portugal rejected - The Portugal News
- Portugal’s Parliament rejected Chega’s bid to confirm a decree creating a penalty of loss of nationality.
- The decree had already been declared unconstitutional by the Constitutional Court and vetoed by the President.
- A two-thirds majority was needed, but the measure only had support from Chega and CDS, totaling 56 votes.
- The final vote had 152 deputies against the confirmation out of 208 voting deputies.
- The PSD broke with Chega on the issue and backed away from confirming the decree in Parliament.
- PSD and CDS proposed amendments that would narrow nationality loss mainly to crimes against the State and terrorism.
- The Constitutional Court said the original decree violated the constitutional principles of equality and proportionality.
- The left-wing parties, plus PSD, IL, PAN and JPP, voted against the confirmation motion.
