New Nationality Law: the decree on loss of nationality in Portugal rejected - The Portugal News

Portugal’s Parliament rejected Chega’s bid to confirm a decree creating a penalty of loss of nationality.
The decree had already been declared unconstitutional by the Constitutional Court and vetoed by the President.
A two-thirds majority was needed, but the measure only had support from Chega and CDS, totaling 56 votes.
The final vote had 152 deputies against the confirmation out of 208 voting deputies.
The PSD broke with Chega on the issue and backed away from confirming the decree in Parliament.
PSD and CDS proposed amendments that would narrow nationality loss mainly to crimes against the State and terrorism.
The Constitutional Court said the original decree violated the constitutional principles of equality and proportionality.
The left-wing parties, plus PSD, IL, PAN and JPP, voted against the confirmation motion.
