I don’t read a ton of fiction, which means the ones that stick really stick. This novel follows a Hungarian man across decades of his life with absolutely spectacular writing that’s spare, propulsive, and quietly ruthless. A life shaped by class, money, and the random violence of circumstance, told without sentimentality and with few, well-chosen words. I finished it a little stunned, and it made perfect sense to me that it won the Booker Prize.
