Portugal sees decade-high surge in invention patent applications - The Portugal News
- Portugal recorded its highest number of national invention patent applications in the last decade in 2025.
- A total of 1,170 national invention patent applications were filed, up 22.9% from 952 in 2024.
- The University of Coimbra ranked first in patent application volume.
- Female inventors were involved in 34% of the patent applications.
- The Northern region led national patent filings with 37%, followed by Greater Lisbon at 26% and the Central region at 22%.
- European patent applications originating in Portugal rose 6.1% to 368.
- Unitary-effect European patent applications increased 18.4% to 122.
- Trademark, logo and distinctive sign applications totaled 23,229 in 2025, a 7.9% year-on-year increase.
- Portugal was among the European countries with the highest trademark applications per million inhabitants, ahead of Spain, France, and Germany.
