I grew up watching Ina Garten on Food Network, and she’s still one of the few TV cooks whose recipes I genuinely reuse. I’d heard the headline version of her story (White House job, then the Hamptons), but the memoir makes the pattern clearer: she keeps taking slightly unreasonable leaps and then doing the unglamorous work to make them stick. It’s also, quietly, a marriage book: her husband Jeffrey (whom she’s always cooking for on the show, and who later became dean of Yale SOM) is a rock and really unleashes her risk-taking potential. I finished it feeling oddly energized, like I’d just borrowed a practical playbook for noticing luck and actually acting on it.
